Space Travel

Because of the lack of gravity, astronauts become taller in space.

Only twelve astronauts have set foot on the surface of the moon.

The first manned space flight was made in April 1961 by Yuri Gagarin, a Soviet cosmonaut, in Vostok 1.

To apply to become an astronaut with NASA, you have to have racked up a minimum of 1000 hours flying jet aircraft first.

It then takes two years of training before an astronaut undertakes their first space mission.

A spacesuit weighs more than 125 kilograms, and it takes three quarters of an hour to put it on!

The first man-made object sent into space to orbit the earth was the Russian satellite Sputnik, launched in 1957.

The very first animals man sent into space were fruit-flies - the first experiments of this type were conducted in 1947.

There have been four tragic accidents during spaceflight. NASA lost two shuttles - Challenger and Columbia (the first during launch, the second during re-entry), whereas Russia suffered the loss of astronauts on both the Soyuz 1 and Soyuz 11 missions.

A spacesuit costs around $11m, with three quarters of this being for the backpack and control module.
